DNS (Domain Name System)

Updated on 1 min

DNS (Domain Name System) translates human-readable domain names (e.g., cenedril.net) into machine-readable IP addresses. Without DNS, you would need to remember IP addresses to visit websites.

DNS is a critical infrastructure service: if it fails, virtually all internet-based services become unreachable. Attacks on DNS include cache poisoning, DNS hijacking, and DDoS against DNS servers. Security measures such as DNSSEC, DNS-over-HTTPS, and redundant DNS resolvers protect against manipulation and outages. Inside the network, DNS logging provides valuable data for detecting malware communication with command-and-control servers.
