DR (Disaster Recovery)

Updated on 1 min

DR (Disaster Recovery) encompasses the strategies, plans, and procedures for restoring IT systems and data after severe disruptions such as natural disasters, cyberattacks, or hardware failures.

Key metrics are RTO (Recovery Time Objective — how quickly must the system be operational?) and RPO (Recovery Point Objective — how much data loss is acceptable?). A DR plan defines recovery sequences, responsibilities, and test cycles. DR has a narrower focus than Business Continuity Management (BCM): DR concentrates on IT systems, while BCM covers the entire business operation. Regular DR tests (at least annually) are crucial to ensuring actual readiness when an incident occurs.
