Write Protection

Updated on 1 min

Write protection prevents files, directories, or entire storage media from being modified or deleted. It is implemented via filesystem attributes, hardware switches (e.g. on SD cards), or WORM storage (Write Once Read Many). In a forensics context, write protection safeguards evidence against accidental alteration. For audit logs it ensures integrity: records can be written but cannot be tampered with after the fact. In an ISMS, write protection is an integrity control. You deploy it wherever the immutability of data is critical.
