EXIF Data

Updated on 1 min

EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format) are metadata automatically embedded in image files. They contain information such as the capture date, camera model, GPS coordinates, exposure settings, and sometimes the photographer’s name.

From a security perspective, EXIF data are a privacy risk: GPS coordinates in published photos can reveal locations, and device information facilitates social engineering. EXIF data should be removed or reviewed before publishing images. Tools like ExifTool allow targeted deletion of individual fields. In IT forensics, EXIF data are valuable because they document the time and location a photo was taken.
