MPLS

Updated on 1 min

MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) is a routing technology where packets are forwarded based on labels rather than IP addresses. Carrier network operators use MPLS to provide enterprise customers with dedicated, high-performance connections between sites. MPLS links offer predictable latency and quality-of-service guarantees. From an information security perspective, MPLS provides logical traffic separation but does not include inherent encryption. If you transmit confidential data over MPLS, you should add IPsec or a comparable encryption protocol on top. Many organizations are migrating from MPLS to SD-WAN while retaining MPLS for critical links.
